Man-Cat Monday
Note from Mommie: Maybe I should be calling this one Bad-Cat Monday. This morning as I was getting ready to leave for work, I caught Chance "marking" the bathroom rug I just washed yesterday. He has never done this before and I have no idea why he is starting now. I know he thinks of that rug has his territory and defends it from both Shadow and Imp, but he has never marked it until today. I thought getting him fixed would prevent him from spraying, but maybe he just doesn't like the smell of the laundry detergent? I don't know. None of the other animals were in the bathroom when I caught him, but his tail was all puffed out. Maybe he heard another animal out the window and he felt territorial. I am just clueless. Anyone have any ideas as to why he would be doing this now?

Our Mom sez:
He could have gotten startled, or maybe he just isn't fully used to Imp yet. Feliway might help.
But I also would keep a close eye on him- although it really sounds like he was indeed marking, of course peeing out of the box can also be a sign of a UTI and other health issues.
Maybe it wasn't smelling right to him anymore because you just washed it?
He's not long been fixed and it can take a while for the testosterone still circulating in his system to work itself out. Niko and Cloud have it right about it maybe being a security issue with Shadow or Imp (depending on whether Imp is pregnant or not, she will also be giving off some strong hormones) My Mum says to use some Feliway spray on the rug after washing and maybe put up a Feliway diffuser, this will help everyone feel more secure. Something may have startled him when you weren't there or they may have all had a bit of a fighty five minutes. Cat social hierarchy can be quite fluid and change now and again, especially after things like neutering. A check up for urinary problems would be a good idea too. See if you can watch him taking a pee in his litter, if he's straining at all or crying out then off to the vet!
Best of luck, hope everyone is ok

I'm going to leave this one up to all of my kitty friends. Mom and I have no idea, but hope it won't happen too often.
We were going to say something similar to Wicky. Mom read somewhere that it can take a couple of weeks for the hormones to go away. Mom got us a feliway difuser when Miss Jade came to live with us because we were all a little stressed. It only took one bottle before we were back on even footing. Mom says if you get some, shop Amazon. They are a lot cheaper.
